October 2008 -
November 2008
As I write this article, we are approaching our first complete week of
the 2008-2009 school year. We have posted signs in the neighborhood, but
again I want to remind everyone to please drive slow and lookout for
children. Please respect the school buses and stop when you see the red
lights flashing, whether you are behind the bus or coming toward the
front of the bus. Also, in respect to the laws and courteous driving, if
you see an ambulance running hot (sirens and/or flashing red strobe
lights) please pull over and give the ambulance room to get past you. I
was speaking recently to a Houston Fire Department/EMS Supervisor that
makes a lot of scenes in the Houston area and he was explaining to me that
they were trying to get the District Attorney to accept charges on an
individual that blocked access to an ambulance at the scene of a
pedestrian hit and run. The individual just refused to move over and now
could be facing criminally negligent homicide charges since the
pedestrian died. At any rate, it is a serious problem that we all need
to do our part to fix.
Yard of the Month is winding down, but I would like to say Thank You
to all of the winners for 2008. I appreciate anyone that strives to make
their home a better place to live. Maintaining your yard in 100 degree
plus weather is hard work, so hats off to all of the 2008 Yard of the
Month Winners!
On a final note, during the last week of August, Precinct 4 Sergeant
George Beck was dispatched to the Oaks of Devonshire park to help some
children in need. When Sergeant Beck arrived on the scene, he found
several scared children and a four foot long Copperhead guarding the
playground area. Sergeant Beck had to kill the snake to remove it from
the playground area (I dont want to hear anything from you extreme
animal lovers, this was a safety issue with our children) and then he
inspected the playground to insure the childrens safety. Thanks
Sergeant Beck, you went beyond the call of duty and we appreciate your
services! With all of that said, please make sure you are careful when
using the park, playground, and all other amenities as we are very close
to a bayou and these types of animals will appear from time to time.
Have a Safe and Happy School Year!
Until next time,
Mark Smith
